The Journey of UCO<\/strong><\/p>\n Typically in a commercial kitchen, used cooking oil is seen as waste. This oil is often dumped causing damage to the environment, including our water sources and the release of harmful greenhouse gases. What seems like a simple process, pouring oil down the drain can be very detrimental to the world around us. As oil is a hydrophobic substance, it forms a thick layer above the water, suffocating the aquatic life and clogging up treatment plants if we choose to dispose of UCO this way.<\/p>\n Supported by Neutral Fuels, the project collects and supplies our UCO to be converted into biodiesel, a renewable and cleaner-burning alternative to traditional fossil fuels. An inspiring example of waste becoming a valuable resource.<\/p>\n The Role of Neutral Fuels<\/strong><\/p>\n Since their inception in, 2023, Neutral Fuels\u2019 direct actions have resulted in a reduction of more than 54 million kgCO\u2082e* for customers who include some big names in the restaurant, oil and gas, transportation and construction industries – to name a few. Incredibly, Neutral Fuels is the largeast producer of biofuel in the Gulf region, becoming one of the key experts in the field.<\/p>\n Neutral Fuels uses cutting-edge technology to process UCO into biodiesel through an advanced refinement process. Unlike many other biofuels, Neutral Fuels\u2019 biodiesel can be used as a direct replacement for diesel without modifying engines. This sustainable energy source produces up to 90% fewer carbon emissions than fossil fuels, making it a powerful tool in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n Their success in converting UCO from businesses like McDonald\u2019s UAE into biodiesel has set a benchmark in the region. GMG is proud to be part of this growing movement, contributing to a greener future by diverting waste from landfills and creating a renewable energy source.<\/p>\n The Circular Economy in Action<\/strong><\/p>\n At its core, this initiative is a perfect example of the circular economy\u2014a system where waste is minimised, resources are reused, and environmental impact is reduced. Instead of discarding UCO, we ensure it is repurposed into biodiesel, closing the loop between waste generation and energy production.<\/p>\n For GMG, this partnership reflects our commitment to sustainability and innovation. By participating in the circular economy, we\u2019re not only addressing waste management but also contributing to the UAE\u2019s broader vision for renewable energy and reduced carbon emissions, as highlighted in initiatives like the country\u2019s support for biofuels.<\/p>\n Why Biodiesel Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n The environmental benefits of biodiesel are immense. It provides a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, helping to reduce air pollution and dependency on nonrenewable resources. Biodiesel also supports local industries by creating jobs in renewable energy sectors, further contributing to sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n While GMG currently does not use the converted biodiesel in our fleet, the positive environmental impact of our contributions cannot be understated. Every litre of UCO we supply reduces greenhouse gas emissions, saves finite natural resources, and aligns with global goals for sustainability.<\/p>\n What\u2019s Next for GMG?<\/strong><\/p>\n We are very proud of our achievements with Neutral Fuels and are excited to see more achievements through our collaborations. Together, we have collected 7,550 litres of UCO which has been converted to 9,450 litres of Biofuel. This has resulted in a saving of 26,969g CO2e.<\/p>\n As a company rooted in innovation, GMG is exploring more opportunities to expand its sustainability efforts.
