At GMG, we recognise the crucial role water plays in sustaining life, industries, and ecosystems. As we join the global community in observing World Water Day, we proudly highlight our ongoing efforts to optimise water consumption and contribute to the conservation of this precious resource.

Water-Saving Upgrades Across Operations

In our pursuit of environmental sustainability, GMG has implemented a series of water-saving initiatives across our operations. From our factories and warehouses to our retail stores, we have introduced sensor-activated taps and showerheads that automatically control water flow, ensuring efficient use. Additionally, we have upgraded our flush tanks to more efficient models, minimising water wastage without compromising performance.

These upgrades are part of our broader strategy to reduce water consumption and minimise our environmental footprint. By integrating cutting-edge technologies and adopting water-efficient practices, we continue to lead by example in the region.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment for Sustainability

In 2023, GMG took a significant step forward in our commitment to water conservation by establishing advanced wastewater treatment plants at our Dubai Industrial Park (DIP) and Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) facilities. These state-of-the-art plants are designed to treat and recycle wastewater, allowing us to reduce our reliance on fresh water for operational processes.

Our wastewater treatment initiatives have already delivered remarkable results. In FY 23-24, GMG treated approximately 9.8 million imperial gallons of wastewater, marking a 37.4% increase from the previous fiscal year. This substantial increase demonstrates our dedication to enhancing water recycling capabilities and supporting sustainable practices in all facets of our operations.

Recycling Efforts that Benefit the Environment

At GMG, sustainability is not just about water conservation; it’s also about ensuring that recycled water has a positive environmental impact. Through our recycling initiatives, we have been able to irrigate 1,300 ghaf trees, a native species that plays a vital role in the UAE’s ecosystem. These trees are nurtured with recycled treated water sourced from our MEGA Data Center (MEGA DC), exemplifying how water reuse can benefit local flora and contribute to green initiatives in the region.

Financial Savings Through Water Recycling

Our water recycling initiatives have not only benefited the environment but also positively impacted our bottom line. To date, GMG has saved AED 340,000 through the implementation of these measures, showcasing the financial advantages of sustainable practices. This demonstrates that conservation is not just an ethical choice but also a smart business decision that can lead to significant cost savings.

Our Planet Pillar

In line with the Planet pillar of our GMG Cares CSR program, GMG, in partnership with the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), has contributed to the ‘Dubai Can’ initiative by installing a free water station at the Al Qudra cycle track. This initiative has proven successful, with the sponsored fountain eliminating up to 482,410 single-use plastic water bottles since its installation in July 2022. Plans are also being made to install more water stations in other communities.

Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Future for All

As we celebrate World Water Day, GMG remains committed to advancing our sustainability efforts and contributing to a future where water is used responsibly and efficiently. Through continuous innovation and the integration of sustainable technologies, we are working to ensure that our operations and practices align with global environmental goals.

At GMG, we understand that every drop counts. By taking proactive steps to conserve and recycle water, we are helping to secure a more sustainable future for generations to come.
